Building skills beyond the classroom

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award at Thames

Thames British School is proud to offer students the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a globally recognised programme that has supported millions of young people since 1956.

The Award encourages students to step beyond the classroom, discover new interests and develop skills that will remain valuable throughout their lives. Through practical challenges and real-world experiences, participants set personal goals, take responsibility for their progress and learn to respond positively to unfamiliar situations.

In a rapidly changing world, young people need more than academic knowledge alone. The programme helps students develop confidence, resilience, independence, problem-solving, leadership, organisation and communication skills. It also encourages them to contribute positively to their communities and recognise the difference their actions can make.

The four areas of the Award

1.Voluntary Service

Students contribute their time and abilities to support others and make a positive difference within their community.

2.Skill Development

Participants choose a skill to develop, set individual goals and demonstrate commitment and progress over time.

3.Physical Recreation

Students take part in physical activity, supporting their health and wellbeing while developing perseverance and self-discipline.

4.Adventurous Journey

Working as part of a team, participants plan and complete a challenging journey that develops independence, collaboration, decision-making and resilience.

Connected to our school values

The Award closely reflects Thames British School’s core values of Integrity, Collaboration, Curiosity and Resilience. Students act responsibly, work towards shared goals, explore new interests and persevere when faced with challenges. These experiences allow them to put the school’s values into practice beyond the classroom.

Supporting future pathways

Completing the Award provides students with internationally recognised evidence of their commitment and personal development. It can strengthen university applications by demonstrating qualities such as initiative, leadership, teamwork, community involvement and the ability to balance long-term responsibilities.

Most importantly, the programme empowers our students to challenge themselves, broaden their horizons and become confident, compassionate and future-ready young people.
