This Friday afternoon, our IBDP Coordinator, Ms. Delmet, participated in a workshop led by Matt Glanville, the IB Director of Assessment. Alongside other IB educators, she explored the most effective ways to teach young learners how to use AI tools efficiently and ethically. This workshop is part of our ongoing commitment to integrating technology into our curriculum while ensuring our students understand the responsibilities that come with it.

A Proactive Approach to AI

In line with the IB approach, the learning journey began two weeks ago for our secondary students. In an engaging assembly led by Ms. Delmet, students reflected on their use of AI technologies, examined their practices, and received practical improvement tips. This initiative aims to empower students to harness AI as a tool for learning rather than viewing it merely as a shortcut.

“It was definitely thought-provoking for our students—some even approached me at the end of the day to share their thoughts on the topic!”

Ms. Delmet shared. The discussions during the assembly prompted many students to reconsider their relationship with technology, encouraging them to think critically about how they engage with AI tools in their academic work and beyond.

Fostering Ethical Use of AI

As AI technologies become increasingly prevalent in education and daily life, teaching students to use these tools responsibly is more important than ever. The workshop led by Matt Glanville highlighted various strategies for educators to incorporate ethical considerations into their teaching.

  • Understanding AI’s Limitations: Students learned to recognize the strengths and limitations of AI tools, enabling them to use these technologies effectively while maintaining their critical thinking and

  • Encouraging Responsible Usage: The importance of using AI tools ethically was a central theme. Students discussed scenarios in which AI could be misused and brainstormed solutions to avoid these pitfalls.
  • Promoting Digital Citizenship: Our curriculum is designed to foster responsible digital By integrating discussions about the ethical use of technology into our lessons, we are preparing students to navigate the digital world thoughtfully and responsibly.

Looking Forward

The insights gained from the workshop will not only benefit our IBDP program but will also enhance our broader educational approach at Thames British School Madrid. By embracing AI as a tool for learning while instilling a strong sense of ethics, we are preparing our students for a future where they can confidently and responsibly engage with technology.
